Late photographer's artistry goes on display at Pascagoula art gallery

The photography of the late Lyle Peterzell will be on exhibit Nov. 14-Dec. 20 at the Jolly McCarty Depot Art Gallery in Pascagoula. His widow, Lanier, and the Singing River Art Association will host a reception, open to the public, on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2-4 p.m.
The exhibit is called: "A Gulf Coast Journey: The Enduring Legacy of Lyle Peterzell."
The Gulf Coast was the childhood home of Lyle and Lanier. They moved back to the coast in 2004 from Washington, D.C., where Lyle was a paintings and sculptor photographer at the National Gallery of Art, where he recorded and publicized major events for collections of the fine art displayed there.
A professional photographer for more than 27 years, he also worked in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Nashville for major clients, as he honed the technical aspects of his photography.
The Pascagoula exhibit is a result of his desire to share his work with the community he loved most, his hometown. Lyle's untimely death in 2012 halted his plans for a show in that same year. Lanier has now put together a show that features her late husband's high quality images of South Mississippi, rural and coastal, historic and contemporary.
Lyle's fine art photographs capture the essence of the Gulf Coast, its ambience, and especially the natural environment," Lanier said. "These works are vital for the Gulf Coast to be preserved, as he has documented timeless beauty, including landmarks in Jackson, George, Hancock and Harrison counties, and also in Natchez and the southern coast of Alabama."
Recovering from a near total loss of all equipment, belongings, and records in Hurricane Katrina, Lyle set out to document the devastation, and at the same time continued to photograph the beauty of the coastal surroundings. "These show pieces/images represent some of the best of eight years of work until his passing July 23, 2012 at only 55 years of age," Lanier said.
In Lyle's words, "You look for balance, you look for scenes that read left to right."
Lanier: "Though Lyle has said that nature through God is the artist, his work is much more than accurate representation. He has shown a deft instinct for composition."
Lyle's work has been shown in major venues, like the Mississippi Library Commission in Jackson, the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Alabama. Shops, galleries and hospitals throughout the state feature his artistry either for sale or for the edification of those who frequent these locations. Singing River Health System's gift shops in Pascagoula and Ocean Springs have his work for sale.
The Jolly McCarty Depot Art Gallery is located at 504 Yon Ave., formerly Railroad Street, in Pascagoula. The gallery phone number is 228-938-6752.
