Pascagoula High senior's essay wins her a trip to DC, WWII Museum

 

As Mississippi's winner of the National World War II Museum's Salute to Freedom contest, Pascagoula High senior Mary Beth Kinsey was one of 51 students nationwide who went to New Orleans for the grand opening of the museum's new U.S. Freedom Pavilion -- The Boeing Center. Her narrative of how Mississippi, specifically Ingalls Shipbuilding, contributed to the war effort is on display at the museum.
Kinsey was honored at the National History Day awards ceremony last summer in College Park, Md. When the Mississippi Honor Flight organizers heard of her honor, they invited her be to the first junior guardian to travel with 40 veterans to visit Washington D.C. this fall.
Ranked eighth in her graduating class, Kinsey is the daughter of Ford and Elisabeth Kinsey. In addition to her awards in history, she has been selected as the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen. She is president of the French Club, Key Club and Pascagoula High School Color Guard. She is also a member of the Pascagoula High School IMPACT Show Choir, PHS Concert Band and National Honor Society.
She plans to attend the University of Mississippi, where she will pursue a degree in journalism with an emphasis on editorial journalism and a minor in history and French education. She also plans to study writing and film at the Savannah School of Art and Design as a graduate student.
