Lunch in Bay St. Louis, dinner in Gulfport part of 395-mile trip
Approximately 200 cyclists will stop in Bay St. Louis and Gulfport on Sunday as part of the annual Ride 2 Recovery Gulf Coast Challenge presented by UnitedHealthcare.
The injured veterans, troops and supporters will ride bicycles, hand cycles and recumbents on the 395-mile trip from New Orleans to Tallahassee, Fla. A recumbent bicycle is a bicycle that places the rider in a laid-back reclining position.
Steve Gleason, the retired New Orleans Saints safety, will lead the injured veterans out of Champions Square at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on a custom-built tandem recumbent bike from Ride 2 Recovery and UnitedHealthcare. Gleason and his wife, Michel, have been training on the unique tandem, known as The Big Easy.
Lou Wilkerson, a local spokesman for the ride, said the cyclists are expected to reach Bay St. Louis at 1:30 p.m. They will have lunch served by American Legion Post 139 of Bay St. Louis. They will then proceed to Gulfport and are expected to arrive around 4:30 p.m. They will have dinner at the Courtyard Marriott.
They leave for Mobile on Monday morning.
On Tuesday, they will ride from Mobile to Orange Beach, Ala.
On Wednesday, they will head to Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Next Thursday, they will go to Panama City.
They will finish the trek next Friday by riding from Panama City to Tallahassee. The cyclists will finish at the Aloft Hotel at 200 North Main St. in Tallahassee.
