PASCAGOULA -- City leaders are looking to expand its recreation facilities and amenities, but how they do that is still in question.
The City Council met Tuesday with members of the recreation commission, which presented its list of priorities."We've put a lot of work into coming up with the direction we want to go," said Al Brimm, a member of the commission.
The top projects presented are the construction of a new sports complex, a performing arts/community center and a natatorium for swim meets.
The council wants to determine through a feasibility study if the city could support such projects. Parks department director Darcie Crew said such a study could take up to three months.
"We want to validate that we are, in fact, picking projects that will keep residents here and draw new residents to the city," Mayor Jim Blevins said, adding the recreation department's master plan is looking 20 years down the road. "The council feels strongly that we need to do something to move this city forward for our young people."
A sports complex, natatorium and performing arts center could each host events that would bring visitors and revenue to the city, Brimm said.
The council took no action on the matter Tuesday.
The Council passed two resolutions asking for action from the state Legislature. The first asks that the LaPoint Krebs Foundation be able to continue without going back periodically for an extension.
The other measure asks that the Legislature either extend for several years the time the city can continue to levy a hotel/motel tax or eliminate the requirement that the city has to come back periodically to ask for an extension.
