Pascagoula students see how health care works at hospital camp

PASCAGOULA -- Sixteen students ages 6-12 spent a week of their vacation this summer learning about health care-related careers at Singing River Health System in Pascagoula.
The hospital joined Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to offer Kids College for its second year to teach children about a variety of health topics.
At Camp Scrubs, eight departments from Singing River covered subjects such as CPR and first aid training, the importance of exercise and how to use a pedometer, infection prevention and how to properly wash hands and a review of proper nutrition.
Students got to wear scrubs and interact with hands-on demonstrations and hospital staff at four sessions a day.
"These kids really enjoyed learning about the different aspects of health care careers and things we do here in our hospitals every day to help others," said Robyn Gollott, SRHS wellness coordinator and camp facilitator. "Along with the fun, hands-on opportunities provided throughout the week, many of these kids set goals to reach their dreams of one day becoming a nurse, surgeon, pharmacist and even a gator catcher."
