Pascagoula celebrates Round Island Lighthouse milestone
PASCAGOULA -- Pascagoula celebrated the ongoing resurrection
of the Round Island Lighthouse on Monday morning with a topping
ceremony.
The milestone marks the structure reaching its highest point of construction in its progress of being restored.
"It is simply amazing to see this historical structure that once stood upon Round Island for over 150 years right here on Pascagoula soil," Mayor Robbie Maxwell said. "This lighthouse is being brought back to life as we speak."
Around 40 city and business leaders, citizens, local politicians, organization members and history buffs attended the ceremony which lasted around 15 minutes. It was a welcome excuse to come out for a moment, enjoy a breezy sunny morning and celebrate a piece of history.
"(The lighthouse) has reached its highest point of construction with the placement of the gallery, a gallery that shined brightly, guiding so many home," Maxwell said. "Citizens and visitors alike will see the lighthouse when they come to Pascagoula, and I hope they will have that same feeling -- that they are home."
