PASCAGOULA -- Thomas and Dorothy Higgins (Tom and Dot), a
couple living in Pascagoula, set out from their home April 2 for a
68-day "bucket trip" around the world they describe will be the
adventure of their lifetime.
"We have always had a love of travel," Dot Higgins said. "If we were going to take a trip around the world, it had to be soon."
The couple's first stop was Ireland where they spent about a week touring before heading over to sightsee the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia. From Russia, they will travel to see sites in Italy, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Nepal and Cambodia.
The Higgins then plan to rest for a week on the resort island of Bali in Indonesia.
"We have been here many times and know it well, so it is the perfect place for us to rejuvenate," Dot Higgins said.
Indonesia was one of the places the couple lived for a time when Tom Higgins was assigned there while on active duty in the U.S. Navy. Dot Higgins said the country was their favorite posting, and living there afforded them the opportunity to travel extensively in Asia.
Then they'll spend time in Australia and New Zealand, where Tom Higgins plans to bungee jump; in Hawaii to see volcanoes, stars and orchids; and finally in Canada where they'll take a train ride through the Rocky Mountains.
The trip will take more than nine weeks, all self-planned.
The Higgins share interests in gardening, reading and traveling, and Dot Higgins said the 2012 Summer Olympics was the spark that led to the decision to make their travel aspirations come to life.
"Our life together has been a continuous reality," Dot Higgins said. "We debated cutting (the trip) into segments rather than one long trip, but it seemed easier this way. We can't control the future, so we decided to do it now."
Dot and Tom Higgins started a Facebook page to document their travels at the request of friends and family back home wanting to "follow" them on their journey.
"We thought only our friends from Pascagoula would be interested, but now we have people from all over following us," Dot Higgins said.
The page is titled "The Adventure Continues," derived from the couple's regularly used mantra, "Kejalanan terus," an Indonesian expression that means "The road continues."
"When something bad happens, its message will get us through, and when it's an unusually unpleasant experience, it's a type of reward and reminder," Dot Higgins said.
The Higgins invite anyone who is interested to follow them on their Facebook page. A link to the website can be found at SunHerald.com.
