JACKSON, Mississippi -- The Mississippi Senate honored Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula Thursday on celebrating its 75th anniversary as the state's largest private employer.
Sen. Brice Wiggins of Pascagoula introduced a resolution commending Ingalls on its anniversary and thanked Sen. Michael Watson of Pascagoula for putting together the resolution, noting Watson was not present and instead at home with his wife, who is expecting a child."Thank you for your dedication to Mississippi," Wiggins said, noting Ingalls employs some 10,000 workers in Mississippi and 37,000 nationwide.
Wiggins then received permission to allow Jim McIngvale, Director of Community and Governmental Affairs for Ingalls, to address the Senate.
"I want to thank you on behalf of all the employees of Ingalls Shipbuilding," McIngvale said. "You have supported us in every way possible and it's an honor and a privilege to be here today."
The resolution -- Senate Concurrent Resolution 624 -- notes Ingalls was founded by Robert Ingalls in 1938 as Ingalls Iron Works. In 1961, it was purchased by Litton Industries and remained a subsidiary of Litton until 2001, when the shipyard was purchased by Northrop Grumman, which in 2011 formed a new subsidiary, Huntington Ingalls Industries.
The resolution also notes Ingalls has a weekly payroll of some $15 million -- $11 million of which goes to Mississippians -- and that the company has paid $57 million in taxes over the past three years and donated $376,000 to Mississippi organizations in 2012.
"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN," the resolution reads, "That we do hereby recognize Ingalls Shipbuilding on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary as a leader in the national and international shipbuilding industry and extend our best wishes to this excellent corporate citizen on this auspicious occasion.
